The earthquake in Christchurch, on 22 February, has given me much to think about. Coming on top of a string of disasters in Australia over the summer - it has been a stark reminder of the incredible power that resides in the elements we live with. We had some anxious moments as we looked to account for all of our family in the region - and our hearts go out to those who have not been so fortunate. We truly never know what each day is going to bring. These clips show some of the immediate aftermath:
This very clever website illustrates the scale of the earthquake in Christchurch. Play the map from just before the 22nd of Feb and watch the 'carpet bombing' effect of the swarms of aftershocks. It almost leaves me speechless.
What is it about an emergency that takes us beyond our aches and pains and focuses us on the needs of others? I remember in my time in the Police that, individually and collectively, we were always at our best when there was an emergency to be dealt with. No sooner was it finished and we would go back to business as usual. Why is it that some of us only see beyond ourselves when something terrible happens to another? And why is it that some people see the earthquake as an opportunity to loot and steal?
One of the most touching things, for me, in the whole event is the speed at which other countries have mobilised resources to help. It is in times like these when we really learn who our true friends are. And it is not just other countries. Large numbers of people have dropped everything and are doing whatever they can, working incredible hours, to help. It reminded me of this 'out of the box' anthem from yesteryear..
What is it that breaks us free from the petty and unleashes our energy in such a powerful and compassionate way? What is it that awakens the sense of humanity within us all? Could it be things like 1) the suffering of others, 2) the urgent focus associated with danger, and 3) the sense of connectedness we get from working with others towards something bigger?
Whatever it is - I just wish it didn't take an earthquake, flood or fire to awaken it - in me at least. And it makes me wonder - how long will it take till it becomes yesterday's news and we go back to business as usual - looking after number one?
Food for thought....
